PANSHANGER SAYS NO TO QUARRY

STOP PRESS:
Great news!  Quarrying threat over as inspector backs County Council over NOT including Panshanger in extraction plan.

Read what happened here...

Sadly, The Threat Is Back!

Many of you will know that in 2002 Herts County Council withdrew AFS12 ( Panshanger/ Tewin ) from the list of sites chosen by them to meet government enforced targets to provide sand and gravel extraction for the next ten years or so.  That withdrawal followed a successful campaign by you the residents.

Unfortunately the mining company, Lafarge Aggregates, have objected to this withdrawal and their case is being heard by a Government appointed Inspector on November 11th at County Hall, Hertford.

If Lafarge Aggregates succeed:

  • the roads around Panshanger and Tewin, especially Blackfan Road, Cole Green Lane, Birchall Lane, the B1000 (Old Hertford Road) and the A414 will all be clogged with lorries from the site.

  • The beautiful farmland at Birchall Farm will disappear, the ancient woods will suffer from adjacent land drainage and may be permanently damaged. The ponds and streams will also be affected.

  • Important archaeological remains will also be destroyed. A recently published report by the Museum of London Archaeology Service concluded that the work on the Thames Water Southern Outfall Sewer in the same area would “have a high impact on any surviving archaeological deposits in the area”. A quarry would therefore completely destroy it.

  • Panshanger/Tewin would be enveloped in a cloud of dust, a quagmire of mud, a road network full of lorries and a cacophony of engine noise - FOR OVER TEN YEARS.

  • Over 11,000 residents would be affected.
